So I applied for the Tribes: Ascend beta on a whim a while back and then completely forgot about it. Friday night I got an e-mail that told me I was accepted to the new stage of “Closed” beta (not very closed, but I’ll explain that later) and, after a long night of gaming, I decided to give it a try and play a match or two before bed. Four hours and about 18 matches later, I stood up and stretched. In Summary, this game is amazingly fun.
Anyone who has played one of the classic Tribes games will become instantly familiar with this game but, for someone like me who didn’t play much, the controls felt a little odd at first (ctrl to jump, space to ski, right click to jet, etc…). After a while the controls seem to become very smooth and easy to use and then become the least of your worries.Everything about this game I like; the guns feel right, there is no such thing as hitscan, everything needs skill to hit, movement is smooth and has a real feeling of speed (skiing 200mph down a hillside is fun), the combat is fast paced, and the gametypes are multi-faceted. I really have nothing to nay-say about this game.
I know I’m going to continue to play this game and it’s on course to be my favorite FPS of the year. The best part about it is that it’s Free To Play. Upon release, the game is going to be completely free and make its money through micro-transactions that don’t unbalance the game. I would easily pay $60 for this game because it has the production level on par if not higher than some high-end titles that have been released as of late.
Now, I said I would explain why it is in “Closed” beta not Closed Beta. Mainly because anyone can easily get access by liking their Facebook Page Here, which I would highly recommend if you A) Enjoyed any other Tribes game, B) Like FPS games, C) Want to try something new and, last but certainly not least, D) If you are tired of the twitch shooter wasteland FPS gaming has become.
I’ll do a full review upon the complete release so, for now, I’ll leave you with this: I personally think that tribes is the one game that can redeem the classic skill FPS shooter’s name and once and for all prove that a FFP model can work for FPS games. I know it’s a high bar to set but I whole-heartedly believe that Tribes: Ascend has the ability to deliver.
