Red helmet seems to be gaining steam

NC State unleashed more alternative uniforms this year than we’ve ever seen. The combination of red helmets with a white block S in tandem with black jerseys for an October home game vs Central Michigan came off surprisingly well.

Then the Wolfpack surprised everyone by pairing the same red helmet with all red uniforms for two huge wins in the final two home games of the season vs Clemson and Maryland. Also if you remember, then we wore all red jerseys and red pants for much of last season as well on our way to a 9-4 season.

The red helmets were very well received by NC State fans and garnered more positive reviews than negative. I’ve personally been wondering what more permanent changes may exist in the future of NC State’s uniform combinations? So, you can imagine why my radar caught a blip when I saw the ‘official’ poster (pictured below) in the lobby of the Wolfpack’s bowl hotel headquarters in Charlotte.

Note the use of the red helmet for the GoPack Store poster. It appears that the appreciation and acceptance of the red helmet is proliferating.

For those gamers out there that can’t get enough Call of Duty – which is a lot of you according to the sales figures – it appears Sony’s new handheld will not be leaving you out. Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing at Sony, Guy Longworth, mentioned that the game was in development while speaking to GameTrailers recently.

Not a lot else was given away by Longworth other than it will be coming out in the fall. No specifics on what the game will actually be, though we do also know that a new console Call of Duty will be out this year according to Activision (big surprise, right?). If the Amazon France blunder last week tells us anything, it’s that all signs are pointing to a sequel to Blacks Ops …

For now, however, we can only speculate on what the title might be and even how it might use the Vita’s abundance of controls and tech. Can you imagine using the touch pad to play? THQ: Homefront multiplayer demo coming soon

THQ has announced that a multiplayer demo for Homefront is in works, and it will be release soon. No launch date has been set as of yet. The news was confirmed by Brian Farrell earlier today during their earnings call.

Brian Farrell said, “It’s a fairly unusual strategy but where Homefront really shines is the online 32 player multiplayer capability. We know because of our strong marketing campaign that a lot of people have heard of Homefront and we think with this new demo we might stimulate more new users and purchasers of the game.”He also added that there willbe robust DLC for the game in coming months, but no details were revealed related to it.Check out our review for the game HERE.

A “Final Fantasy” spin-off can be a strange animal to deal with or predict. Recently, the crew at Penny Arcade have set up a new section called the Penny Arcade Report to give a new take on video games. Ben Kuchera, formerly of Ars Technica, was brought in to head up the PA Report, and Kuchera sat down with Valve's Gabe Newell to discuss a little bit of everything. Kuchera asked Newell, sporting a new beard, about the possibility of Valve making hardware, and Newell responded by saying "if we have to make hardware we will." He knows that Valve has no reason to think it would be any good at making hardware, but if it is necessary to do so in order to continue to have innovation, it will. Newell would rather have the hardware people create it, but acknowledges the possibility exists for Valve to make hardware of its own.

Kuchera then turned the discussion to Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and Left 4 Dead 3, to which Newell says Valve is "acutely aware" of how much it annoys fans by not talking about those games. It sounds like Newell knows all about Valve Time, and would rather not reveal any information on the big projects until he has something solid to give us. The first Half-Life was delivered about a year after Valve said it would be, while Half-Life 2 shipped considerably after its announced launch date. Due to that, Valve has taken the opposite approach and will only reveal information on those games (and potentially more) when it knows it can deliver something soon after. While that may not appease everyone, at least Valve wants to try and only announce a new game when it is good and ready for it.

When asked about the subject of pricing and if Valve thinks it has that figured out, Newell said he does not think so. He believes Valve is still learning about it and what works best for the consumer. Newell also says people are approaching pricing from a "pre-Internet fashion" and have not realized the potential to deliver a better price. When a digital copy of a game costs less on launch day than a physical copy, I think we can declare a win, but until then, something has to change. Newell says free-to-play games should be a wake up call to others in the industry to see how much value customers can create without charging an upfront fee. Newell says F2P games are just one example, but wants the industry to see the value a community can bring instead of determining what price to sell a game at.

Spotifriday is dead! And it’s been replaced by a February Highlights thread (and monthly Spotify playlist) and this, a new weekly feature in which DiS’ editor shares his picks of the week, as a digest sort of thing…

Firstly, Erika M Anderson (aka EMA) released a new single this week for charity. We’ll let Erika explain…

“This footage comes from a South Dakota trailer park in the mid-90s, and features a small group of freaks and misfits who seem to be having the time of their lives. Dressing up, hanging out, making up funny skits, and lots of laughing. When I look back now at our fresh young faces (yes that is me with the short dark hair and cat-eye liner), I’m amazed at how simply happy we all look. This is especially remarkable as I know what was going on outside those plywood walls: getting called names, shoved into lockers, and threatening to get our asses kicked for being queer or punk or just plain weird.

But despite all that, there is a joy, strength and self-acceptance in our faces that I find inspiring and wanted to pass on. I’m offering the proceeds of this song to an anti-bullying non-profit started by a 15-yr-old girl in Long Island who was a victim of bullying for 7 years before switching schools. It’s called The Jamie Isaacs Foundation and it works to bring youth advocates into schools and pass anti-bullying legislation.

When I first put together this video I sent it out to the people involved to get their take on it before it was released. My friends thought it was “adorable” but I didn’t hear back from the sweet boy in the turquoise teddy. I worried that it was too much, too revealing, and he wouldn’t want that footage put out into the world. Finally, I got a message back:

‘That was the most beautifully done video I have ever seen I love it I love it I love it. I could not stop bawling. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so secure as when we were all hanging out in the trailer bedroom. Erika. Lacy. All 3 of us went thru some pretty tough shit. But we made it through. Lets use what we learned and give it to somebody else that needs it.’

There’s an unsaid rule that no-one should ever (EVER!) cover Neil Young. Then again, not everyone has the ability to make one of his songs their own and inject their own colour palette into the work of one of the greatest songwriters of all-time. Sometimes you bash a band name into Google to check if they have a new video, and you flick around a bit and find yourself gazing at a fan-made video that puts some imagery to music. Bioshock Infinite will be better on the PS3.. maybe

Bioshock Infinite is easily one of my most anticipated titles of the year and while I never really got into Bioshock 2 that much I did thoroughly enjoy the first.

But the big question will be what platform to get it on when it’s finally released as we are expecting it to be released on all three platforms (Xbox, PS3 and PC) and the recent trend has been for all platforms to be pretty much equal.

However according to a post on the Xbox dominated site, msxbox-world, the game is going to be infinitely better on the PS3 which took me by surprise as I wouldn’t have expected that from 360-centric site.

However the point is a valid one by the look of it, according to the latest reports the PS3 version of Bioshock Infinite will be the only version to include Move and 3D support and if you are into 3D gaming this then makes your decision just that much easier.

However if like me you are not a fan of 3D then the addition of 3D gaming and a waggle stick doesn’t do much. In fact the idea that the PS3 version has Move support isn’t filling me with much confidence and if Irrational Games stick in stupid mini-games or segments just to showcase the move (like turning a valve) then I’m going to be seriously cranky.

What do you think though, is the addition of 3D further proof that the PS3 is the more capable gaming platform or is this all about the gimmicky factor?
